According to Mr Hammond’s song' it never rains in southern California ...’
... unfortunately I can not confirm that 😊- during my visit to the ‘Cradle of California’ at the end of my time in the US in December, the forecast announced two rainy days after four wonderful days of sunshine - so there was my opportunity to leave the beach and to explore the city.
After taking a quick glimpse at downtown San Diego on the first rainy afternoon, I was pretty disillusioned: I saw or felt very little of the flair that might be there perhaps on sunny days, to me the city looked pretty faceless and honestly - too dismal.
And I had no real desire to see another city, I rather wanted to spend as much time outside as possible or at least not go back to the city center and so I decided to go see the lighthouse at Point Loma. I took the bus and after several changes into smaller and smaller vehicles I reached Point Lobos.
Originally I had planned to walk back along the coastline - at least until the rain would come.
On the way there it turned out that this would probably be a rather uncomfortable walk: wide areas were military area and therefore sealed with fence and barbed wire, I would probably end up walking long stretches on the road ... that was not what I was looking for.
Like so often in the previous months the bus driver had some good advice 😊: get off at the third stop from now, then walk along the Hill Street down to Ratkay Point and the Sunset Cliffs. His wife always took her lunch breaks there when she was a school nurse at the elementary school. If I followed the coastline up north I would reach a nice little café, where I could take a cappuccino or even have a quick bite for the way back.
I think this ‘nice little café’ was probably what decided it for me - there had been a bit too much Starbucks Coffee in the days before ... but to be honest I always fared quite well with such recommendations, whether it was the graveyard keeper, fellow photographers, bus drivers or Uber riders who gave them. And this time it proved to be another good suggestion.
After a short walk I reached the really beautiful Sunset Cliff National Park and spend the rest of the morning walking and photographing along this beautiful coastline - and when the rain eventually came, I could already see the Little Lion Cafe - isn’t that all you could ever want ? 😊
